Trial delayed in fork stabbing case

By Jessica Heffner

SPRINGFIELD —

The trial of a Springfield man accused of stabbing another man to death with a serving fork has been postponed.

Laune Dozier Jr., 19, is charged with two counts of murder. He’s accused of stabbing Jason Wones to death July 17 during a dispute inside a home at 338 Lincoln Park Circle.

His jury trial was slated to begin Monday. However his attorney, Anthony Vannoy, filed a motion for a continuance as well as a motion to suppress evidence to Clark County Common Pleas Judge Richard O’Neill on Monday. The trial has been rescheduled to Jan. 14, according to court records.

Police have alleged Dozier fought Wones with a two-prong fork he grabbed from the kitchen after Wones tried to intervene during an altercation with a woman at the home on Lincoln Park Circle. According to police, Wones was stabbed several times, including the left side of his chest. He was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

After the alleged stabbing, Dozier fled to a home at 730 East St. in Springfield. He was taken into custody after a two-and-a-half hour standoff with the Springfield Police Division’s Special Operations unit.

Dozier remains in the Clark County Jail on $525,000 bond. He’s also being held on an unrelated aggravated robbery charge. That trial is set to begin in December, according to court documents.
