Thanksgiving fatalities drop this year

By Lou Grieco

COLUMBUS —

The number of motorists killed on Ohio’s roadways this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend was dramatically lower than the prior three years, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Monday.

Between Wednesday and Sunday, 11 people were killed in eight accidents, including four fatalities Wednesday in a Warren County accident. There were 17 people killed in 2011, 18 in 2010 and 20 in 2009, the OSP said.

In the Warren County crash, four people were ejected from a Ford F-250 truck that rolled over several times after going off the side of Harveysburg Road. Killed in the high-speed crash were Jonathan Kroninger, 21, of Massie Twp.; Benjamin Edwards, 26, of Oregonia; Brittany Gerondale, 26, of Morrow; and Rose Feltner, 22, of New Vienna. Alcohol is suspected in that crash, the OSP said.

That was the only fatal accident in the Dayton area during the Thanksgiving weekend.

None of those killed in the eight fatal crashes was wearing safety belts, the OSP reported

“We are encouraged by the reduction of fatalities this weekend, however, motorists need to remember that wearing a safety belt is the single most important thing they can do to protect themselves during a crash,” said Colonel John Born, Patrol superintendent. “Simple things like wearing a safety belt or designating a sober driver can go a long way in ensuring these tragedies don’t occur.”

The Patrol arrested 459 drivers for OVI during the holiday weekend.

A complete statistical analysis of the Patrol’s enforcement activity over the holiday weekend is available at statepatrol.ohio.gov.
