A Clark County man shot in the abdomen didn’t seek immediate medical attention because he didn’t want to go to jail on several warrants, authorities said.

Ricky Delawder, 40, was shot once after retreating inside his home at 10744 Haddix Road in Mad River Twp. on Friday night. Clark County Sheriff’s Office’s Sgt. Scott Elliott said Delawder was fighting with a man he knows, Willie Russell, 23, address at large, outside the home when Russell allegedly pulled a gun. Delawder reportedly ran inside and shut the door, but Russell is accused of firing through the door at least three times, striking Delawder once.

Elliott said Delawder’s three daughters, who are 8 years old and younger, were inside when the bullets were fired. One of the girls was standing next to her father when he was shot, Elliott said.

Instead of calling 911, Delawder gathered his children and fled to a home in Fairborn, where authorities found him. Elliott said he’d bandaged the wound himself. Delawder reportedly told authorities he didn’t call for help because he was afraid of going to jail due to several warrants out for his arrest on misdemeanor charges.

He was treated at Miami Valley Hospital for the wound.

After he was discharged from the hospital, he was booked into the Clark County Jail on two misdemeanor domestic violence charges and an assault charge, which are unrelated to the shooting, according to court records. Delawder remained in jail late Monday afternoon.

Russell’s Pontiac Bonneville was found in Fairborn, but he remains at large. He faces charges of felonious assault and discharging a firearm into a habitation. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Clark County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 328-2560.
