HAMILTON — A Hamilton man accused of holding a woman hostage for 10 days and raping her repeatedly was charged Monday with one count of kidnapping and 18 counts of rape.

Police were called around 4 p.m. Friday to the 900 block of Campbell Avenue, where a woman said 44-year-old William H. Manis had attacked and held her captive.

The 22-year-old Hamilton woman said she escaped by jumping out a second-story window and running to a neighbor’s house.

“Upon arrival, a female stated a man struck her in the face several times while she was at his home on Nov. 16,” police said. “The female reported the suspect bound her hands, feet and mouth and held her in a closet for 10 days.”

According to police, Manis, of 904 Campbell Ave., raped the female twice a day from Nov. 17- 26 after meeting her along East Avenue and taking her to his home. The woman, who has been arrested in the past on charges of prostitution, said she went willingly with Manis to the home.

Hamilton police Officer Rich Burkhardt said the woman, who was treated and released from Fort Hamilton Hospital, “was beat up pretty bad.”

According to 911 tapes, the neighbor who called said, “We just got a handcuffed girl come through our door in pretty tough shape. She said she got from the house next door and escaped from a window.

“Her feet are handcuffed and her hands are handcuffed. She has some funky ropes around her neck.”

The kidnapping and rape charges against Manis are first-degree felonies. His case was continued until Friday in Hamilton Municipal Court. He is being held at Butler County Jail on $200,000 bail.

According to court records, Manis was convicted in 1995 of felonious assault. He also was one of three men charged with kidnapping and four counts of rape in Madison Twp. in 1992. Those charges were dropped, however, when a grand jury declined to indict, according to court officials.
