The Greene County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Yellow Springs man and woman killed in a murder-suicide over the weekend.

Elizabeth Carter, 47, was dead inside her home, located at 3481 Larkins Rd., when deputies arrived Saturday night. Law enforcement officers had to make an “emergency entry” into the home after they were dispatched around 9:15 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

“We have to render the scene safe before medics are able to enter,” said Mjr. Eric Spicer, a spokesman for the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Carter was shot more than once, according to a law enforcement official.

Carter’s former husband, 52-year-old Jimmy R. Carter, shared the house with her and also was inside. He was severely injured, according to law enforcement officials.

“All information gathered to this stage indicates that Ms. Carter was murdered by her former husband James Carter before he committed suicide,” Spicer said in a written statement.

Jimmy Carter died inside the home while Miami Township Fire Department rendered medical attention.

Four people, identified as friends and family, were inside the home with the Carters at the time of the shooting, Spicer said. They were standing outside when deputies arrived. Two people inside dialed 911 and reported the shooting.

No other injuries were reported.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide. The investigation is expected to take up to several weeks to complete.
