DAYTON —

The mother of a 19-month-old boy who died of blunt force trauma has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, will receive a sentence of four to seven years and agreed to testify for the prosecution in her boyfriend’s murder trial.

Crystal N. Laurel, 25, and Dustin L. Rybak, 25, were arraigned Thursday morning in front of Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Dennis Adkins on charges in the April 7 death of Takota Hasty. Laurel stood mute while Rybak pleaded not guilty.

Laurel then pleaded guilty in front of Judge Michael Krumholtz to involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, tampering with evidence and permitting child abuse. Court documents allege Hasty had bruises and burn marks covered up with makeup.

As part of a plea deal with the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, Laurel agreed to testify against Rybak, who is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, endangering children and tampering with evidence.

Rybak’s trial date has not been scheduled. Laurel will not be sentenced until Rybak’s case is closed. Both remain in jail on bonds of $1 million.
