A 19-year-old Springfield man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole until after 15 years for allegedly stabbing another man to death with a serving fork.

Laune Dozier Jr., of Springfield, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary in Clark County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.

His attorney and the prosecutor were meeting to select a jury for trial when Dozier agreed to take a plea deal offered the week before. The deal allowed Dozier to not have to serve consecutive prison terms on both charges, said Chris Kinsler, Clark County assistant prosecutor.

Kinsler said he’s satisfied with the sentence and that Dozier will remain behind bars for at least 15 years. Dozier has a lengthy criminal history dating back to his time as a juvenile.

“This is someone we wanted to get off the streets,” Kinsler said.

The murder charge stems from a July 17 incident at a home at 338 Lincoln Park Circle in Springfield. Witnesses told Springfield police Dozier attacked a woman there and Jason Wones, 33, tried to intervene. Dozier grabbed a two-prong serving fork from the kitchen and stabbed Wones in the chest. Wones was pronounced dead at Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Dozier was apprehended by Springfield police later that afternoon after a three-hour standoff with the Special Operations Team at a friend’s home at 732 East St. Officers fired at least a dozen rounds of pepper spray into the home before forcing their way inside. Dozier was found hiding under a pile of clothes, according to police.

The aggravated robbery charge stemmed from a separate incident on July 13 at the Kroger on Bechtle Avenue where Dozier and two other men stole money from a woman in the parking lot at gunpoint, authorities said.
