SPRINGFIELD —

A Springfield man accused of hitting and killing a retired Springfield police officer in a July crash was indicted this week on charges that included aggravated vehicular homicide.

A Clark County Grand Jury indicted Christopher G. Stewart, 48, of 8 N. Limestone St., on one count each of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Stewart is scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing at 10 a.m. Friday in Clark County Common Pleas Court before Judge Douglas Rastatter. The OVI charge is a misdemeanor.

The charges stem from an incident on July 7 when Stewart was accused of driving a truck that struck William Parks, 60, and his wife, Cindy Parks, who were on a motorcycle on West High Street in Springfield. Stewart’s truck was driving south on Yellow Springs Street when it allegedly went left of center, police said, and struck the motorcycle.

William Parks, a retired Springfield police officer, was killed in the crash. William Parks began working for the police division in 1975 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired in 1991. He later worked as a custodian for the city of Springfield where he eventually became the lead custodian before retiring in 2002.

Records from Clark County Municipal Court show Stewart had previously been convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in 2011, and his license was forfeited until 2013. He was convicted of OVI and DUI five times between 1992 and 2007 and has several convictions for driving with a suspended license, according to court records. He had also been convicted of having firearms in a motor vehicle in 1998 and an assault charge in 1996.

Staff members at the Clark County prosecutor’s office said the case is still pending and declined comment.
