Man accused of driving 80 mph with unrestrained baby in car

Green Twp. —

A Xenia man is facing a host of charges after troopers alleged he sped past them at a high rate of speed while intoxicated and with his unrestrained infant son in the back seat.

Tyson Wilson, 33, has been charged with child endangering, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving under suspension, reckless operation and failure to use a child restraint.

The charges stem from an incident on Sept. 20. A trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Springfield Post reportedly saw Wilson driving at about 80 mph in a 55 mph zone on U.S. 68. When he tried to stop Wilson, he continued driving, the highway patrol said, turning onto Springfield Xenia Road at a high rate of speed before pulling into a driveway and nearly striking a girl.

Once pulled over, Wilson failed a field sobriety test, according to the incident report, but refused to take a breath test.

“He did make a statement about being high at the time and used some profanity in his quotes,” said Lt. Matt Cleaveland with the highway patrol. “He seemed pretty nonchalant about the whole deal.”

Wilson had his infant son sitting unbuckled in a car seat, which was also not fastened to the backseat. When questioned about his driving, Wilson allegedly told the trooper that, “I just drink and drive. That is my thing,” according to the report.

Wilson was wanted on felony charges in Greene County, including possession of drugs, drug trafficking and possession of criminal tools. He was picked up by a Fairborn police officer after the traffic stop and is in the Greene County Jail pending a court hearing, according to court records.

Wilson’s license has been suspended 33 times, and 10 of those suspensions are still current.

“We can just do our job and enforce the appropriate sections of the law with these people,” Cleaveland said.
