BELLEFONTAINE — The body of a woman found Wednesday near Vienna, Georgia in a cotton field has been identified as that of Gladis Russell.
Craig Rotter of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said at 2:30 p.m. Thursday dental records were used to confirm the identity. A autopsy is underway to determine her cause of death, Rotter added.
Russell, 85, has been missing for nearly a month before she was found by a farmer working on well drilling equipment in the field. She and her husband, Richard, went missing from their Logan County home on Feb. 16. His body was found Feb. 26 near Chattanooga, Tenn. He had been stabbed.
Samuel “Sammy” Littleton II, charged with killing Tiffany Brown, reportedly admitted killing the Russells. He has not been charged in their deaths and is in a West Virginia jail awaiting extradition to Ohio.
A court hearing is scheduled for March 15. He will be served with a Governor’s Warrant for his extradition on that date, said Bellefontaine Police Chief Brian Kunze.
Rotter said the body was found 2 miles from Interstate 75’s Exit 112. It was fully clothed and 20 yards into the field from a dirt road that traveled off from Georgia Highway 27, Rotter said. The setting of a cotton field near a sandy road was similar to what Littleton described to authorities.
Tiffany Brown, the daughter of Littleton’s longtime girlfriend, was found stabbed to death hidden under a pile of scrap wood in Littleton’s basement.
Richard Russell died of a stab wound to the chest and blunt force to the head, according to a Tennessee medical examiner. The 84-year-old Logan County man’s body was found Feb. 26 dumped in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Littleton was captured in West Virginia on Feb. 23. Police said Littleton has made statements implicating him in the deaths of the Russells. He has not been charged in connection with their deaths.
Littleton was captured behind a Walmart in Princeton, W.Va. The Russells’ car was found in the store parking lot.
Hamilton County, Tenn., Medical Examiner Dr. James K. Metcalfe, in an autopsy report, said Richard Russell had several skull fractures and extensive bruising of the face.
With the recovery of the Russells, the case moves into its legal phase, said Logan County Sheriff Andrew Smith. When he’s returned, Littleton is expected to be housed in the Logan County Jail, Smith said.
