SPRINGFIELD —

A man reluctantly emerged from the attic of a vacant house where police said he was stealing copper.

John Martin Osterday Jr., 36, was arrested Monday on suspicion of breaking and entering, trespassing and other unrelated warrants, according to Clark County Municipal Court records.

Police responded shortly before 6 p.m. to a report of a burglar being inside a vacant house in the 600 block of Wiley Avenue.

Officers observed an opened window and a book bag on the floor which contained cut copper pipes and hand tools, according to court records.

Osterday was in the attic and officers resorted to using pepper spray to get him out, according to records.

Osterday is being held on $15,000 bond in the Clark County Jail.
