URBANA —

Urbana police on Friday arrested two men suspected of breaking into the city Park Division’s vehicle and equipment building.

Ronald Morgan and Troy Byrd were charged with breaking and entering and theft, felonies, following the alleged break-in at Melvin Miller Park, 831 Children’s Home Road.

According to a press release, the burglary was discovered by a park employee, who said he arrived at work at 5:48 a.m. Friday and observed the crime as it happened.

The burglars ran east through farm fields. The employee contacted police and provided descriptions of the burglars.

Officers from two shifts responded and set up a perimeter, while other officers followed a trail of stolen property left by the burglars.

Officers found Morgan, 26, of 1508 Children’s Home Road, in the area of 1510 Children’s Home Road at 6:53 a.m. and took him into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant. At 7:47 a.m., police found Byrd, 25, of 637 Kenton St., hiding underneath clothes inside a bedroom closet at 1508 Children’s Home Road and took him into custody on a warrant from Adult Probation.

Both suspects were taken to the police division where they were interviewed.

Stolen property was found along the path taken by the suspects from the facility to the area where they were found. Additional stolen property and other evidentiary items were recovered inside 1508 Children’s Home Road. Police are placing the value of the recovered stolen property at $1,000.

Police continue to investigate and additional charges may be forthcoming. Both suspects are in the Tri-County Regional Jail, Mechanicsburg, and will make their initial appearances in court Tuesday.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell stated police are appreciative of the quick actions of the reporting person and description provided and are grateful no one was hurt.
