8-year-old saves 6 from fire, dies trying to save seventh

An 8-year-old boy is being remembered as a hero after he was killed in a mobile-home fire trying to save his disabled uncle from the blaze.

The local fire chief told CNN Doohan was staying with family over the weekend in upstate New York when he noticed a fire in the single-wide trailer.

Police say when they arrived on the scene, they quickly found out Doohan was able to wake six other people who were in the trailer at the time and help them escape, including two other children. (Via WHAM)

Doohan's uncle is disabled and reportedly couldn't make it out of the burning home on his own, so the boy went back inside to get him. But unfortunately, neither of them made it back out.

Investigators found both Doohan and his uncle's bodies in the back of the trailer once the fire was extinguished. They also discovered his grandfather's body in a front room. (Via WROC)

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities say it was likely accidental. The police chief also told reporters he didn't think the trailer had functional smoke detectors. (Via WBIR)

Doohan's mother told WHEC she's devastated but takes comfort in the fact that Doohan was so courageous.

"He's being remembered, and I am so proud of him right now, so proud, I've never been prouder."
