Texas cheerleaders support rival school after deadly crash

Hundreds of cheerleaders from all over Texas traveled to Abilene on Friday night, showing support for a squad that experienced tragedy last week.

Last week, cheerleaders from Iraan High School riding on a school bus were involved in a crash that killed the squad's sponsor and injured seven others, KXAS reported. The cheerleaders were returning from the Braves' state playoff quarterfinal victory against Munday when their bus was struck by an 18-wheeler on a Texas interstate highway, KTAB reported. The squad's coach, 52-year-old Elizabeth Pope, was killed.

Starla Warren, who took over coaching the Iraan squad, created a Facebook page call BRAVE Strong Cheerleaders to rally support for the team. A post asking for surrounding cheer coaches to help her “pack the stands with cheerleaders at the Iraan playoff game Friday” has since gone viral, getting almost 2,000 shares.
“When my coach told me about it, I was really heartbroken,” Sam Houston High School cheerleader Victoria Limon told KXAS.
“We’re just a big cheer family. Even though we don’t always cheer for the same team, we’re still together,” Martin High School cheerleader Katherine Griffith told KTAB.

Friday night at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene, the stands were packed with nearly 700 cheerleaders. Iraan’s football team improved to 15-0 with a 42-21 semifinal victory against the Wellington Rockets and advanced to the Conference 2A D2 state championship game next Thursday against the 14-1 Burton Panthers.
