Police in Washington state say one person was killed in a high school shooting in addition to the lone student gunman.

Police said they are confident there was just one shooter involved. The gunman, identified by his family as Jaylen Fryberg, opened fire in the school cafeteria.  Fryberg, a student at the school, is dead, but it is not known if he was shot or if it was suicide.  Police believe a .40-caliber Beretta handgun was the weapon used.

A hospital spokeswoman said earlier that three victims were in critical condition after the shooting about 30 miles north of Seattle. It was not immediately clear if the person who died was one of those brought to Providence Everett medical center.

Three students and a teacher reported hearing gunshots and KIRO-TV has received emails and texts from parents of students and teachers at the school.

"Our son just called to let us know that his kids are ok - his son was about 50 feet from the shooter - a student that he knows.  Our grandson and his friends ran away - jumped a fence and went to a home in the area.  He didn't know about any victims but thought there was at least one," said Tom Hopper, who emailed KIRO..
