Dog found shot, hog tied making recovery

A K-9 rescue organization in North Carolina is offering a cash reward to find the person who shot and hog tied a dog and left it to die on the side of the road.

Doctors said they expect Camilla to make a full recovery.

It's been a tough two weeks for the terrier mix. Rescuers gave her that name because it means "warrior maiden."

"We chose to name her that because she's such a fighter. She fought so hard to live," said Brittany Mabe with Happy Tails Rescue in Maiden, N.C.

Two days after Christmas, Camilla was found in a ditch on the side of a road in Cherryville, N.C.

She had been shot in the head and her back legs were tied together.

Camilla was picked up by Animal Control and brought to Maiden Small Animal Veterinary Hospital. Veterinarians didn't think she would make it.

"We didn't want to take her into surgery immediately because she had so much swelling on the head," said veterinarian Kim Mitchell.

Now all the swelling is gone but the wounds remain. Camilla is set to have surgery to remove her eye that is still damaged from the gunshot.

Everyone is surprised how well she's recovering.

"Legs are good. She's up walking, eating. She's gained 2 pounds since she's been here," said veterinarian Kim Mitchell.

Lincoln County Animal Control is investigating and there's a $500 reward for a tip that leads to an arrest.

"That was intentional, that was catching her, tying her up, shooting her and dumping her off somewhere" said Amber Maiwald.

After surgery, doctors said she'll be in recovery for a couple weeks. Camilla will be fostered by Happy Tails Rescue Incorporated until she's ready to be adopted.

Before she's adopted Camilla will be heart-wormed tested, spayed, and will have all her shots.
