Pope, Trump exchange war of words

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his plans for a border wall has drawn the ire of Pope Francis.

The Associated Press reports that while aboard the papal plane Thursday, Francis commented, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel."

Francis was returning from a trip to Mexico, where he held a large outdoor mass and prayed for those who died trying to cross the Mexico-U.S. border.

While Francis admitted that he did not know the details of Trump’s plan, and said he’d give him the benefit of the doubt, he added, "I'd just say that this man is not Christian if he said it this way."

Trump, who was at a campaign event when the pope’s comments were reported, immediately fired back.

The Vatican clairfied the pope's remarks Friday, saying the comments were not directed specifically at Trump.
