Ohio Sen. Brown offers President Trump ideas on NAFTA

Sen. Sherrod Brown has a few suggestions for President Donald Trump as he begins to renegotiate NAFTA.

Trump last week announced that he plans to renegotiate the 23 year old trade deal between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The announcement came after threats of leaving the trade deal altogether.

Brown, an Ohio Democrat who wrote a book called “The Myths of Free Trade,” Monday sent a letter to Trump with a four-point plan for renegotiating the deal. The plan included securing anti-outsourcing and ‘Buy America’ provisions up front and before negotiations even begin; creating individualized negotiation strategies for manufacturing sectors that have been hurt by outsourcing; creating enforcement tools that favor U.S. workers, not foreign corporations if the deal is violated’ and including workers in negotiations.

The plan comes after Brown met with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross last week.

By setting high standards, putting workers ahead of corporations and refusing to compromise on outsourcing, “we can create the best possible deal for all American workers,” Brown said.
