Yappy Hour set for dogs, owners

Free series will return for second year.

People and their pets will get a midweek break next Wednesday.

Yappy Hour, a chance for dog owners and their pets to get out and enjoy the warmer weather, returns for its second season, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Snyder Park near the Central Bark Dog Park.

The free event is presented by National Trail Parks and Recreation.

Attendees can enjoy live music, browse special vendors‘ offerings and can enjoy food vendor and adult beverage choices available for purchase.

“A lot of people are spending more time with their pets, and this is a way to allow them to enjoy time together with other pet owners in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Miste Adams, National Trail’s recreation superintendent.

She said organizers have a better grasp of how to make Yappy Hour even better in 2017 with several people pitching in following the initial year.

The SPCA will be among the vendors and offer pet microchipping for an extra fee and will also have pet arts and crafts. Pets and owners can create a paw print design in the shape of a flower together.

Veteran singer and guitarist Skip Hoyt will perform. He’s a familiar entertainer in the area having played at several local venues including the Summer Arts Festival’s Live on the Terrace.

Adams said Hoyt is an appropriate choice because he also loves animals.

Area vendor Freddie’s Franks and Burgers will have food for sale and Heidelberg Distributing will offer beer, available for ages 21-older. Although that is aimed at ages 21-older, everyone is welcome to Yappy Hour, Adams said.

She said the event is also a great time to discover Central Bark, which opened in 2015, with nearly three acres of space for pets to explore.

“It’s amazing how many people don’t know it’s there. We hope more people will use it,” Adams said.

Future Yappy Hours will be the third Wednesday of the month through September.
