Traffic stop leads to seizure of suspected meth in New Carlisle raid

A traffic stop in New Carlisle late Friday morning led to a raid on a residence hours later where deputies seized nearly 3 pounds of suspected meth, the Clark County Sheriff's Office announced in a statement.

According to sheriff's Lt. Kristopher Shultz, evidence obtained from the traffic stop led to a warrant search at 106 S. Smith St. in New Carlisle sometime after 4 p.m.

There were no residents at the address, but deputies and detectives from the criminal investigations division seized "approximately 2.5 to 2.8 pounds of methamphetamine," a firearm, ammo, "quantities of drug paraphernalia" and "evidence of drug trafficking. “

Shultz said even though the late morning traffic stop led to the raid, the two incidents are not connected.

The deputy who initiated the traffic stop did so because he saw suspicious activity involving the vehicle and suspected traffic violations. Neither of the people in the vehicle reside at the South Smith Street address, the lieutenant said.

The two people in the vehicle have been charged with low-grade drug offenses, he said, while no arrests were made from the raid. The sheriff's office has not released any names.

Shultz said the sheriff's office cannot estimate the street worth of the meth because the purity of what was seized is still being tested by the crime lab.

Sheriff Deborah Burchett called the seizure "a victory for the citizens of New Carlisle and an example of why their police levy, and the services it provides, are so important to protecting the city."
