I-70 traffic slowed by accident, vehicle fire

An accident on I-70 east and a vehicle fire worked to bring interstate traffic to a crawl Thursday afternoon.

Scott Bevill, 39, believed to be of Normal, Ill., suffered non life-threatening injuries when his motorcycle rear-ended a white panel van, Ohio Highway Patrol Sgt. Erika Englund said.

He was treated and released from Springfield Memorial Medical Center and cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance, Englund said. The van, which bore no license plates, left the scene, she said.

The second incident involved a fire that destroyed a pickup truck and the flatbed trailer it was towing.

The driver told troopers he pulled off the interstate when his truck began to smoke. Neither he nor his two passengers were injured. Their names were not released.

Both incidents were reported at roughly the same time, just after 3 p.m. They were not connected, Englund said.
