This year’s judge, Jane Black, said it was difficult to narrow the creative entries from the museum’s members to just six top placers. Her choices “reflect an endless joy in seeing how the artist’s hand engages with a material and a subject to create a story.”

The Yellow Springs-based Hudson’s work is an Italian Carrara statuario marble piece resembling a woman and was Black’s top choice, earning a $500 prize.

“Jon Barlow Hudson exhibits a mastery of material to envision a stone figure both referential and original, archaic and new,” Black said in her juror’s statement.

Black is a member of the Dayton art community and formerly associate director of the Dayton Art Institute and executive director of the Dayton Visual Arts Center.

Finishing second was Gary W. Birch’s “Driving With Picabia,” an oil, collage charcoal on wood piece, and Barbara Edwards was third with the photograph “Family Outing.”

Honorable mentions went to Deidre Lucas for oil on canvas painting “Miss Scarlet,” Kelley Booze for graphite on paper sketch for “From the Highway” and Grant Des Combes for meta piece “Sea Turtle.”

Woodwork, welded pieces, documentary style photography, digital photography, fiber, clay, printmaking, mixed media and a variety of other pieces can also be viewed at the exhibition.
