The Temps aim to permanently entertain

In what may be a first for the Summer Arts Festival, an energy exchange will take place as part of the Saturday, July 1, show.

That’s how The Temps co-founder, lead singer and guitarist Joe Bair describes the interplay between his band and the audience.

“This group has a lot of fun together and hope everybody else does, too,” he said.

The Temps will entertain the second half of a double bill of Springfield artists with Animal Grace beginning at 8 p.m. at Turner Pavilion in Veteran’s Park for this free show presented by the Springfield Arts Council.

Now in their seventh year, The Temps play covers of danceable tunes from pop, disco and rock from the ‘70s to today, and offer a visual treat with a range of colorful costume changes that keeps in the spirit of the band’s quirky sense of fun.

“We started in costume as office nerds like out of ‘Office Space’ and it stuck. We change it up and go from flashy suits to disco to ’80s rockers,” said Bair.

Rounding out the band are co-founder and bassist Rob Koogler, drummer Spencer Garrett and guitarist Parker Fulk. All are from the Springfield area.

Lindsay Dabe will fill in at bass for Koogler during Saturday’s performance.

With a strong following in the area, recent times have seen The Temps playing as far as North Carolina and headlined the Hollywood Casino in Dayton’s New Year’s Eve show last year.

“We’ve got some loyal supporters but the crowds have really grown,” said Bair.

The Temps will also open the entertainment at this year’s Clark County Fair, the band’s second time there.

The group also has another band project completely opposite of The Temps. Emerald City Heroes is a tribute to the classic ‘90s Seattle grunge scene with covers of Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam classics.

“The crowds at these shows are completely different to Temps shows,” said Bair. Emerald City Heroes will make its fair debut the night after The Temps perform.

It will be the second time The Temps have played on the Turner Pavilion stage. The first was at the initial Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition.

Bair said the band has even had a blast practicing for the Arts Festival slot, which can only bode well for the show that night.
