Ten Commandments monument will be reset Wednesday morning

SPRINGFIELD — A monument bearing the Ten Commandments will be reset in front of the Clark County Common Pleas court Wednesday morning, July 28, according to officials with the Clark County Sheriff’s office.

The monument will be erected at 7 a.m. Wednesday, said Sheriff Gene Kelly. A deputy will block one lane of traffic on Limestone Street in front of the courthouse as the stone is re-installed, he said.

The monument was knocked down during a hit-and-run accident during the early morning hours of Nov. 1, 2009.

No one was captured or charged in connection to that incident.

The monument was sent to a quarry in Georgia for repair, according to county officials.

Drake Monument in Springfield will set the monument back in place, with the county having to repair the foundation.

County officials have said fixing the stone cost $10,250 — about twice as much as replacing it — with insurance covering $7,750.

Officials opted to repair the monument rather than replace it to protect the county from potential lawsuits regarding the separation of church and state.
