Summer, fun events come to New Carlisle this weekend

New Carlisle will be the place to be on Saturday, June 24, with a variety of events all happening at once.

Impact Bethel will kick off the big day with a pancake breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 220 S. Main St. Breakfast includes sausage gravy, biscuits, pancakes, sausage and drink for $6 for an adult. Children younger than 10 years old pay only $4. There is also a sausage biscuit to go. Cost is $2 for one or $5 for three. Breakfast will be available until 10:30 a.m.

The New Carlisle Community Garage Sale will go on all day with each sale having its own start and stop time. There is no directory this year so look for the signs or the crowds. I imagine some may even start before the pancake breakfast. I will not.

I love it when an entire community, neighborhood or subdivision coordinates their garage sales and fun events. It’s so pleasant to just park the car and take a nice walk as I shop. After all, I have to make that step counting goal and this will help.

The first New Carlisle Farmers Market of the summer begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Each year this market gets better and better. There will be fresh locally grown produce, baked goods and crafts. La Condesa No. 2 will be back, serving some fantastic food. 101.5 Hank FM will broadcast.

Last year the Farmers Market began accepting SNAP/EBT cards. This year that program will be expanded with a matching program. A SNAP customer may check in at the Market Master’s table at 114 S. Main St. to swipe his or her SNAP/EBT card for as much as $10 to get $20 of tokens for fresh fruits or vegetables each week. This has been made possible through the generous donations of local business, organizations, churches and individuals.

Focus for the first market of the year will be a Wellness Health Fair from 10 a.m. to noon.

“The Wellness Fair is even bigger than it was last year,” said Scott Griffith, one of the organizers with the Western Clark County Business Coalition. “This is a great opportunity for citizens of New Carlisle and Western Clark County to learn more about all the services available in Clark County. The New Carlisle Farmers Market is excited to partner again this year with the Wellville health fair.”

More than 25 health-related booths will join the regular market vendors. These booths will include the Clark County Combined Health District, WIC, Family and Youth Initiative, CareSource, OSU Extension and many more agencies. There will also be music, prizes, food sampling, food preparation demonstrations, summer safety tips, advice on smoking cessation and a variety of activities for the entire family.

Since this is the grand opening of this summer’s Farmers Market and the Wellville Fair, a shuttle service from Park Layne will run from 10 a.m. to noon. The shuttle will leave every 20 minutes from Park Layne Elementary and transport passengers to the CVS Parking lot in the middle of New Carlisle and back. Last shuttle leaves CVS at 11:50 p.m. This service is being provided by Restoration Park Church from Medway.

Farmers Market lasts until 1 p.m. but of course the Community Garage Sale will go on in some yards until dark. As some say, shop til you drop.

Recovering shoppers just might want to cool off and spend the evening at the New Carlisle Pool Party from 8 to 10 p.m. According to the fliers, music will be provided by Good Vibrations. There will be food and dancing. Sounds like great summer fun. Admission will be $3 for everyone, including members.

As I write this the weather forecast for Saturday is rather optimistic but because this is Ohio, it’s best to be prepared for the unexpected. Rain-out day for the Community Garage Sale will be July 1. As luck would have it, that’s also the date of the second Farmers Market of the season that won’t include Wellville but will have its own unique offerings. Every week at the market has a theme and the Saturday markets go on until the middle of September.

What a great way to start the summer.
