Springfield students get ‘amazing’ ride to school on fire truck

Two Kenwood Elementary School students rode to school in style Wednesday morning.

Third-grader Brian Parthmore and fifth-grader Jaiden Welliford hitched a ride on the Springfield Fire/Rescue Division ladder truck as their reward for winning their division in the Fire Prevention Week 2016 poster contest.

The best part was wearing the headset and hearing the sirens, said Parthmore, who won the K-3 division. In his winning poster, he drew a picture of firefighters putting out a fire that showed how residents must find a place to meet outside, he said.

“I got to talk on the walkie talkie,” he said. “I couldn’t hear (the sirens) because of the headphones.”

Welliford’s poster about four ways to prevent fires won the fourth and fifth grade division. She had never seen the inside of a fire truck before, she said.

“It was amazing,” Welliford said. “There were so many buttons … It was the first time I had ever been this early to school.”

More than 60 local students participated in the contest during Fire Prevention Week, which was held from Oct. 9 through 15. Columbia Gas of Ohio provided goodie bags for all entrants and company mascot Digger Dog made an appearance at Kenwood.

The two local winners will have their posters submitted to the state fire marshal for entry into the statewide contest, Miller said.

The Springfield Fire/Rescue Division held three contests: a poster contest, an essay contest and a video contest. The poster and video contests were open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade and the essay contest was open to students in fourth and fifth grade.

This year’s theme was: “What Can You Do for Home Fire Safety?”

“The idea is to educate everybody, but kids in particular,” Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Brian Miller said.
