Springfield Pride festival returns this weekend

Springfield Pride will host its third annual celebration and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual issues this weekend.

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at City Hall Plaza.

“This year is going to be very family friendly,” organizer Stacie Raynor said.

Equality Springfield will host a Kid Zone with a bounce house, crafts, face painting and other fun family activities.

For adults, there will be a beer tent with shaded seating. In addition, there will be food trucks, booths featuring local businesses, community churches, advocacy groups and vendors.

The event is free for the entire day.

“Our hope is to promote understanding, education and diversity,” Raynor said. “Springfield still doesn’t have non-discriminatory policies, meaning someone who is LGBTQ can be fired or lose their housing because there is nothing protecting them within the city’s bylaws. We’re hoping that with events like this, we can bring more attention to our cause and people will take notice.”

After the celebration at City Hall Plaza, a cookout will be held at Why Not 3 from 4 until 7 p.m. The cookout will include music, dancing, karaoke and BBQ.

Pride will end its celebration at Diesel Bar and Nightclub with a show starting at 9 p.m.

“Equality is a right, not a privilege,” Raynor added. “We’re hoping to bring attention to equal rights across the board.”
