Shelby County deputies mourn loss of K-9 partner

A former Shelby County K-9 deputy passed away last week after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Emir, an 11-year-old dog, died peacefully at his handler’s home on Thursday afternoon in Sidney, according to sheriff’s office officials.

During his time in Shelby County, Emir assisted deputies on over 169 narcotic searches resulting in the seizure of 462 grams of cocaine and 130 grams of marijuana. He also aided in three large drug busts and several felony apprehensions, according to the sheriff’s office.

Emir is credited with over $5.1 million in drug seizures, a record for any K-9 deputy in the county.

“We thank him for all the help he has provided in keeping Shelby County safe,” said Sheriff John Lenhart in a statement.

The K-9 was originally born in Czechoslovakia, coming to the U.S. in 2002 - where he was purchased by the sheriff’s office.
