Sam Schmidt prepares to drive using sensors on a cap and his mouth. Schmidt is a quadriplegic race car driver who demonstrated a new technology that allows him to drive a Corvette on the runway at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Tuesday. The SAM project demonstrates human performance technologies that enable a quadriplegic to safely control and operate a Corvette C7 ‘Stingray’. Schmidt will debut this capability at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, just prior to the Indy 500, driving the car at up to 80 mph. The technology used on the SAM project is the first to enable a quadriplegic to control and steer a car at high speed. JIM WITMER / STAFF
