New election filing deadline is Aug. 4

SPRINGFIELD — Changes to election deadlines went into effect this month, a move that won’t affect voters but will affect the filing deadline for local candidates.

The new filing deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4.

“We believe anyone interested in running would plan ahead and either contact the Board of Elections or talk to someone in their respective political parties,” said Clark County Board of Elections Director Mark Oster.

Boards of election were notified earlier this month of the changes. In order to improve voter access for soldiers overseas, absentee ballots must be ready 90 days before the election, rather than the previous 75 days.

“This means the petition filing deadline for candidates for state board of education members and county court judges as well as filing deadlines for questions and issues (including local liquor option petitions) will be affected for the November 2, 2010 general election,” state elections administrator Patricia Wolfe wrote in a letter to local officials.

Candidates or those filing issues for the November election can contact the Clark County Board of Elections at (937) 521-2120 for more information. Champaign County Board of Elections can be contacted at (937)-484-1575.
