Gravel pit proposal for Bethel Twp. is pulled

A New Carlisle developer withdrew his application Monday, July 19 to operate a sand and gravel pit on 654 acres in Bethel Twp.

James Gastineau, managing officer of Prestige Developers, LLC in a letter to the county’s community development department, asked officials to cancel a July 27 special meeting about the issue.

Gastineau did not give a reason for withdrawing his application and did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Monday.

The pit would have been located near the corner routes of Ohio 235 and U.S. Route 40.

A Clark County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting held June 24 brought about 75 people out and several spoke against the pit. They cited concerns about traffic safety, noise, dust, declining property values and possible contamination of a well field that is 1,600 feet from the proposed site.

County Commissioner John Detrick said the proposed pit was just too close to the well field.

“All three commissioners were unanimous in our disapproval,” Detrick said Monday. “We are not against gravel pits, but not at that location.”

Bethel Twp. Trustee Nancy Brown agreed.

“We are pleased that Mr. Gastineau listened to the concerns of residents and has withdrawn his petition,” she said. “We did not think this was a good location right next to Clark County well field and next to the communities of Crystal Lake and Park Layne.”
