Gas prices spike in Dayton region

DAYTON —Average retail gas prices increased 11.5 cents per gallon over the last week in Southwest Ohio and the Miami Valley.

Dayton area gas prices averaged $2.14 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 391 gas outlets in Dayton.

This compares with the national average that has increased 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.27 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Gas prices on Sunday were 57.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 11.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

The national gas price average decreased 7.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 57.9 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"The era of falling gasoline prices will likely be coming to an end soon at a gas station near you,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com. "Not to say declines are completely done, but over the next few weeks we'll likely see more times when stations are raising their prices then dropping them, thanks to gasoline demand that will soon begin recovering and crude oil imports that will soon reflect OPEC's lower output.”

The average price for a gallon of gas in Dayton on Monday morning is $2.15 with prices stable, according to GasBuddy.com. The cheapest gas is $2.05 per gallon at Big Daddy’s on East Third Street and Harshman Street in Dayton.

In the Hamilton area, the average gas price is $2.14 per gallon with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.04 per gallon at Marathon on North Riverside Drive and Trenton Road.

In the Springfield area, the average gas price is $2.15 per gallon with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.09 per gallon at Marathon on Springfield-Xenia Road near Sparrow Road.

Gasoline prices on February 13 in Dayton have ranged widely over the last five years:

2016: $1.56 per gallon

2015: $2.33 per gallon

2014: $3.34 per gallon

2013: $3.72 per gallon

2012: $3.28 per gallon

"The national average typically rises 35 to 65 cents from its low price, usually in February, through Memorial Day, and there's no reason to believe the same won't happen this year, so buckle up," DeHaan said.
