Driver dead after crashing into Springfield restaurant

A man was pronounced dead this afternoon crashing his car into a Springfield restaurant.

Police say the unidentified driver was traveling on West Columbia Street at around 3:20 p.m. when he crossed over three lanes of traffic and slammed into the Senor Piquin Rivera restaurant.

A witness told investigators what they saw as they drove behind the man. He was pronounced dead at Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Cleanup continues now at the scene, where police have closed the right lane of West Columbia Street.

The crash remains under investigation, a reconstruction will be done at the scene on Monday.
