Dayton, Columbus mayors wager over UD-OSU game

The March Madness matchup between the UD and OSU men's programs has spawned some side wagering between the mayors of the two cities the schools represent.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley has put up a basket of Dayton's finest, including Esther Price Chocolates, Mikesells Potato Chips and Buckeye Vodka, to Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's assortment of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, a Columbus favorite.

"Of course I am rooting for Coach Miller and the Flyers," said Whaley. "Since Ohio State won't play us in the UD Arena, we are happy to play them in Buffalo. We have already beaten a number of BCS teams on neutral courts, we are happy to add OSU to the list."

Coleman said, "I invite my good friend Mayor Whaley to join me in Columbus Thursday to watch her Dayton Flyers put up a valiant -- but ultimately futile -- effort against the Ohio State Buckeyes. After the game, I promise to fix her a Buckeye Vodka Martini from my winnings."

The Buckeyes will face the Flyers in Buffalo, N.Y., on Thursday, March 20, at 12:15 p.m.
