Chain to bring smoothies, jobs to long-vacant space

A Springfield property that's been vacant for about three years will be home to a new restaurant by the end of 2013, bringing opportunities for jobs.

Tropical Smoothies Cafe will open at the former home of Heroes Bar & Grill, 233 E. Home Rd., in mid-November at the latest, according to its franchise owner.

The smoothie chain will bring an estimated 25 jobs to that location near Springfield High School and Wittenberg University. In a release, franchise owner Tim Poulos said they've already been taking applications online and hope to receive more in the coming weeks.

City building permits claim the necessary renovations to the property will cost approximately $135,000. The restaurant will offer food in addition to the blended drinks in its name.

The chain has 11 locations in Ohio, with seven of those in the Miami Valley. The company's sales grew 13.8 percent to $149.6 million in 2012.
