Butler Twp. police are looking for men who burglarized a Vandalia self-storage unit

Butler Twp. police are still looking for as many as two men who eluded police after stealing property and a pickup truck from a self-storage facility in Vandalia.

The storage units, in the 10780 block of Engle Road, are believed to have been broken into by one or two men Monday morning.

They broke into several storage units to steal furniture, electronics as well as a pickup and trailer to haul away the goods, according to detectives and the business owner.

Butler Twp. and Vandalia units followed the suspects but ended their attempts to stop the truck.

The men continued down Needmore Road toward the Hollywood Casino and Cargill plant in Dayton.

Cargill security footage shows the vehicle turn onto their property and crash through a mechanical arm gate. The truck became stuck in snow. The suspects got out and ran.

After spotting footprints in the snow, Dayton police believe the men jumped a barbed wire fence and headed into the woods, according to a Dayton police report.

“We know the subjects took off on foot,” Butler Twp. Police Chief John Porter told News Center 7’s Mike Campbell on Tuesday.

“So obviously they felt they were still being followed and, of course, the vehicle was later recovered with most of the stolen property that we believe was taken in this particular incident.”

Porter says he’s unsure of exactly how many victims have been affected, just that there were multiple.

Butler Twp. police is currently reviewing video surveillance. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
