Big stories of 2016: Thousands come out for Trump’s Springfield visit

2016 proved to be an unforgettable year, nationally and locally.

From a historic presidential race to John Legend’s big year to new elected officials locally, we’re taking look at how Clark and Champaign counties fared in 2016.

One of the biggest stories of the year was President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign stop in Springfield.

DETAILS: Springfield rally draws thousands, backs up traffic

An estimated 8,000 people filed into the Champions Center at the Clark County Fairgrounds to hear the then-Republican Presidential candidate. The Trump campaign would make several more stops in Ohio, including his son, Donald Trump Jr. in Troy.

Ohio has been a longtime battleground state for the presidential race. No Republican since Abraham Lincoln in 1860 has won the presidency without Ohio.

Trump would go on to win the presidential race, defeating Democratic Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Voting in Clark County favored Trump with 56 percent of votes to 37 percent for Clinton.
