Native of Auglaize Co. soldier dies in Afghanistan

An Army soldier from Auglaize County died this week while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Sonny C. Zimmerman, 25, of Waynesfield, died Monday in Paktiya Province, Afghanistan. Zimmerman was hurt while on a mounted patrol attacked by a rocket-propelled grenade, according to the Department of Defense.

Zimmerman was an infantry squad leader assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Campbell, Ky.

Some of Zimmerman’s many awards include the Purple Heart and three Army commendation medals, according to the Department of Defense website.

He is survived by his wife Morgan, a step-daughter, Riley McVicker, of Lima; and his parents, Chris Zimmerman of Waynesfield and Michelle Fischback of Jennings, Ohio.
