Big Stories of 2016: Clark County, there’s a new sheriff in town

Clark County has seen a the top of the sheriff’s office for the first time in 30 years.

After a contentious campaign, longtime Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly lost his re-election bid in November to Deb Burchett. She became the first female sheriff in Clark County’s history when she took office in January.

Burchett ran for office following a 34-year law enforcement career, including 29 years as a Clark County deputy. She was the first female sergeant in charge of the investigation division. She most recently has worked as a police officer in South Vienna.

According to Burchett, one of her main goals as sheriff will be to fight the heroin epidemic by working with lawmakers to receive as many grants as possible.

She also said she will create an open-door policy so that her deputies will feel safe to come to her with concerns.
