Springfield students get boost with free haircuts, manicures

A fresh haircut and manicured nails can go a long way to improving a young person’s confidence, but can be an expense some families can’t afford.

That’s why a Springfield beauty and barber shop have looked to alleviate that burden.

Ladies and Gents Barber & Beauty Complex partnered with Springfield City School District to create a program called Operation Give Back. The program gives free haircuts, braids or manicures to boys and girls who attend Lincoln Elementary School.

The shop not only wants to provide the free service, but give encouragement to the students that could help them succeed in life.

“We want to do anything we can to give back to the community,” store manager Sonja Martin said. “Giving back to the community provides a personal growth in all of us.”

The shop, which usually is closed on Mondays, will open the first Monday of the month to give out 15 to 20 cuts and manicures. The students are pre-selected by Lincoln Elementary staff members.

“I am excited,” said Lincoln Elementary 5th grader Alicia Aviles. “This will make me look good and feel more confident about myself.”

Operation Give Back gave its first free haircuts, braiding and manicures in November and plans on continuing through the remainder of the school year.
