Springfield school board to discuss high school’s structure

The Springfield City School District Board of Education is set to hear a presentation Thursday on the structure of the high school.

District leaders declined to discuss details about the presentation, but said the high school staff members were alerted Monday.

“The Springfield High School staff has heard the presentation and as of now we are currently refining the presentation,” District spokesman Scott Marshall said.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Clark Center, 1500 W. Jefferson St., in room 14. It’s open to the public.

There are currently five academies at the high school that students can choose to enroll in. Those academies are business and law, digital media and communications, health and human services, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, applied arts and mathematics), and visual and performing arts, according to the school’s website.

The academy a student chooses dictates many of the classes he or she takes that school year. Students can change the academy they are enrolled in at the start of each school year. The academies are to offer students career based learning, the site states.

“Our advising and course selection processes will offer more career-oriented pathways, so students can better plan coursework and real world experiences to prepare for career and college options that match their interests,” the district’s website says.

District leaders believe it’s too early to discuss the plans because many aspects could change between now and Thursday, Marshall said. School board President Ed Leventhal said he hadn’t received information about the presentation Tuesday afternoon.
