Springfield Class of 1952 to host final reunion, special tribute

The Springfield High School Class of 1952 will present a special tribute to deceased member Dick Shatto and other surprises at its 65th and final reunion.

“It’s the last one because we’re all in our early 80s,” said class president Jim Ingledue, who is organizing the event. “We’ll call people to remind them.”

The reunion will be held July 7, 4-7 p.m. at the Windy Knoll Banquet Center and includes a five-course meal. All members of the class of 1952 are invited. Others may attend by invitation only.

Ingledue thinks this last reunion is special because it will be a final commemoration of what he called one of the best classes Springfield ever had.

“In 1950 our basketball team won the state championship, and that incentivized all of us to achieve over and above what we may normally achieve,” Ingledue said. “The classes of 1950-53 were top tier, our football team during those years was always one of the top five in the state.”

Shatto, who had a successful athletic career, will be specially commemorated at the reunion. Shatto played running back for the Canadian Football League Toronto Argonauts 1954-1965, and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. His jersey #22 is one of four jersey numbers retired from the Toronto Argonauts team.

“He was probably the finest athlete ever to matriculate through the Springfield system,” Ingledue said. “I think the tribute will be an inspiration to our class members and current students and to those who may attend Springfield High School.”

The Class of 1952 will host its next meeting on Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Springfield Masonic Community, to continue planning the reunion. Ingledue said all graduates of the Class of 1952 are welcome to attend.
