Springfield Clark-CTC starts search for new leader

The Springfield Clark Career-Technology Center Board of Education has launched a search for a new superintendent of the vocational school.

The new superintendent will be tasked with working along side every local school superintendent in the county, along with many local industry leaders to ensure that the center prepares its 664 students to be successful in the workforce.

The CTC offers 90 satellite programs and the superintendent’s job pays between $105,000 to $120,000 and is negotiable, according to the search brochure.

Rick Smith is in his seventh and final year as superintendent at the school. He accepted a job offer to be the Warren County Career-Technology Center superintendent last month. His last day on the job here will be May 31.

CTC Board President Jamie Callan said school officials feel good about the direction of the school and want someone to continue the progress of the school. He said he and the other board members are looking for someone who’s going to work with leaders to improve the CTC.

“A leader that will ask for input before all making changes,” he said. “The CTC right now is in a pretty good place, both financially and in the stand point of curriculum and programs. We want someone that is very similar to Rick Smith and to have somebody that will engage all of the stakeholders and get input from everyone before making significant changes and leading the CTC forward.”

The school board has hired a firm to conduct a search for candidates for the position.

The CTC has seen steady growth over the past several years, Smith said, and the student enrollment may reach up to 700 students next year.

“We are in a good place here,” Smith said, adding that taking the job in Warren County was a tough decision. “Our current applications are ahead of where we were last year. Enrollment-wise we will probably be above where we were over the last couple years.”

Being a superintendent of the CTC is rewarding, he said, and the students tend to be more engaged because they are taking classes they want to be in.

“There is nothing better than our students,” he said. “They kind of have a triple-threat option. They can go on to college, they can go into a career field and they are learning life skills that they can use the rest of their lives.

“We are a school of choice,” he said. “Students choose to come here. Watching students excel at doing something they have chosen to do and like to do is a great experience.”

It’s unlikely that the school board will have a new superintendent chosen before Smith leaves for his new job, Callan said. The school might have to choose an interim superintendent until the final selection is made.

“I would think because of the situation here, the good finical stability, I would think there would be some interest in the position,” Callan said. “We are one of the smaller CTCs so it would be interesting to see what type of candidates this job attracts.”
