Clark State honors veterans, military members

Clark State Community College — one of the top military- and veteran-supportive colleges in the country — is commemorating Veterans Day with campus activities this week.

The school held a moment of silence on Thursday in honor of fallen military members. All Clark State campuses will be closed Friday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day.

The campus is also displaying 2,000 United States flags on the Leffel Lane campus, the Greene Center campus in Beavercreek and the Bellefontaine campus. The POW/MIA flag was also be erected on the flag pole of the Leffel Lane campus.

The college held four days of events this week leading up to Veterans Day, Director of Athletics and Student Life Justin McCulla said, including framing a flag and writing letters to service members.

“They’ve done a lot for us, and that’s the reason we live a life of freedom,” McCulla said. “It’s just a special way of saying thank you to those individuals that went overseas and served for us to protect our country.”

Earlier this year, Clark State was named the top school in the 2017 Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) Guide to Colleges & Universities, awarded to school that uses best practices in military- and veteran-supportive education.

The school has received a similar designation about five years in a row, Clark State’s Veterans Service Specialist Dana Kapp said. It offers veterans priority registrations and in-state tuition as part of the Ohio GI Promise, Kapp said. It also has a veteran lounge to make them feel comfortable, she said. About 300 veterans are currently enrolled at Clark State, Kapp said.

“We’ve tried to improve our services to our veterans to make this a campus that they feel welcome at as they transition from the military to civilian life,” Kapp said.
