‘Old person’ gets hope from young woman

I never thought it would happen to me, but it has. I find myself feeling like an old person. To look at young people covered in traditional media it seems they either want to be famous — not for doing anything, simply for being famous — or they want to tear down existing society, with no concrete plans to build up a better one.

Then I come across Adylia-Rhenee Gutierrez. She’s a 20-year-old college student who just might be on the verge of becoming famous. She has launched YhorLife.com, a website community dedicated to hard work, shared values and young people reaching for a higher standard.

Did I just hear Kim Kardashian say, “Huh?”

“Doesn’t exactly sound like a reality TV show or an Occupy sit-in,” I told her. She laughed. “Exactly,” she agreed.

Adylia-Rhenee knows there are other young people out there who will say, “That’s me!”

“You can get anywhere in life if you are willing to work hard and align yourself with like-minded people,” she told me.

This young woman didn’t see a place where young people her like her could hang out online, so she created it. That’s what YhorLife.com is about. You get access to interviews, articles, discussions about building careers, relationships and a positive perspective on life.

“It’s easier to stay on track if you’re with like-minded positive people,” she explained to me.

Adylia-Rhenee is charging $5 a month for access to the community. She is a business student, after all.

As impressive and promising as this all sounded, I have to admit that I could hear the old person doubting voice creeping in.

Later that night, after talking to Adylia-Rhenee, I was telling my beau, Mr. SummerFest, about the interview.

“I asked her what direction she wanted this website to go in,” I told him. “Can you believe she said she doesn’t believe in setting limits, that would only restrict how big this thing can become? Sounds pretty naive to me.”

“Actually,” he smiled, “sounds just like you talk when you start each of your new projects.”

Wow. Guilty as charged.

It’s possible there are young people out there who I get, who are about building things up, not just tearing things down. And it’s possible to make me feel young again.
