THINGS TO DO
By Alexis Larsen
Anthony Bourdain is a busy man.
The final episode of his Emmy-winning Travel Channel series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” aired on Nov. 5. The second-season premiere of “The Layover” will premiere on Monday, and the day before you can catch him talking live about his adventures when his Guts and Glory speaking tour stops in Dayton on Sunday.
His visit is part of a 12-city tour on which he will be waxing philosophically about food, travel, celebrity and anything else that comes to mind.
And if 2012 has seemed busy, then 2013 will be more of the same with the premiere of two TV shows hosted by Bourdain: ABC’s “The Taste” and a CNN series that will see Bourdain doing more of his trademark travel, cultural reconnaissance and insightful food-centered commentary.
The move means that Bourdain will not be returning to his trademark Travel Channel show “No Reservations,” but it also means opening new doors to countries where Bourdain and his crew will now be able to journey to.
“It’s a similar format on a different network,” said Bourdain, who explains that CNN’s infrastructure and experience shooting in more dangerous countries will make those places available to him to explore. Examples might include the Congo, Libya and Gaza — “places where the Travel Channel might have had some security concerns.”
His stop in Dayton, the only Ohio stop on his speaking tour, will mark his first in town. For his talk he says, “I work very hard to make sure people are entertained.”
Not surprisingly, Bourdain characterizes his tour as equal parts “rant, discourse and stand-up routine followed by a question-and-answer period.” To fans of his show it will mean more of the same Anthony Bourdain they know and love.
His contract rider calls for local beer and Red Bull to be on hand in his dressing room before each show. No food, because his best work on stage comes from a “beer buzz and caffeinated energy.”
The key to traveling and eating well in his experience “is don’t eat in places where there are only Americans. You want to eat in a stall where a guy is feeding his neighbors … . Do not go to the place the concierge tells you to go.”
