SPRINGFIELD —

Celebrate German Day with the Springfield Liedertafel Club on Sunday.

The event is open to the public and kicks off at noon with a hog roast.

Musicians Ken and Mary will take the stage from 1 to 4 p.m. “They play German music, including polkas, and they wear authentic German clothes. They are a lot of fun to dance to,” event organizer Mike Stooksberry said.

“We are also having a car show that day,” Stooksberry said. “Registration is from noon to 2, and any kind of car, truck or motorcycle can enter.” There is a $10 entry fee, and there will be 20 awards given to entries. “The car show proceeds will go to the maintenance fund for the club,” said Stooksberry. “We plan to use the money to repave the parking lot.”

There will be lots of German and American food and beverages available, with an open bar inside and outside. “We are planning to have pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, green beans and cabbage rolls,” said Stooksberry. “The cost will be $7 for a sandwich and two sides.”

From 6 to 10 p.m., local band Cosmos will play 1970s and ’80s rock. All day there will be a craft tent, face painting and a playground for the children.

The Springfield Liedertafel is a nonprofit organization that was originally organized in 1888 as a way to preserve German music. The Springfield club continues this tradition and competes in district and national competitions.

“If you like to sing, you are most welcome to join the Liedertafel singers,” said Stooksberry. “Anyone can become a member of the Liedertafel. You don’t have to be German or a singer to join.” Memberships cost $25 annually, and members receive discounts at the bar and on hall rental.
