Ellery performs at Clark State Performing Arts Center

By Melissa Dabe

SPRINGFIELD —

Clark State Performing Arts Center is bringing Cincinnati-based musicians Ellery to town on Thursday as part of its “Wine Down” series.

Ellery, composed of husband and wife Justin and Tasha Golden, has been together for 12 years, initially under the name Dividing the Plunder. They changed their name in 2005. Blending pop, alternative and folk music, Ellery’s songs have been featured in movies, television and radio.

Grammy winner Malcolm Burn, who has also worked with Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and Iggy Pop, produced their most recent album, “This Isn’t Over Yet.” All together, they have produced six discs and three EPs, with possibly their best known song, Down Down Down featured in the 2011 movie “No Strings Attached.”

The journey for the duo has had its ups and downs. Tasha confronts those challenges head-on in describing the songs on “This Isn’t Over Yet.”

“We recorded “This Isn’t Over Yet” in 2009. It had been several years since we last released a full-length album, so we were looking forward to getting these songs out into the world — and we loved working with Malcolm,” said Tasha. “What we couldn’t have foreseen at the time was that by the end of that year, I’d be in the midst of a severe clinical depression, and that we’d be taking our brand new record and putting it on a shelf, so to speak, while we took time off the road and figured out what to do. It was frightening and crazy, but it turned out to be the best thing we’d ever done.”

Guests at the concert can expect what Tasha calls “an enveloping experience.”

“Our songs are personal, but in a way that we hope speaks to the deeply personal in anyone. Because there’s this strange thing that can happen with live music, where someone is listening to a performer, but somehow feels heard in the process. That’s beautiful,” said Tasha.
