Eye Spy cool architecture downtown

Springfield buildings have more than may meet the eye

SPRINGFIELD —

Children age 5 to 10 can get to know their city in a fun way Saturday by attending the Eye Spy Springfield tour, sponsored by the Springfield Preservation Alliance.

Kevin Rose, volunteer with the Springfield Preservation Alliance, said, “The children will look for things on downtown buildings. Covenant Presbyterian Church has these angels that protrude from the building that are interesting, and there’s a carving of the post office on the post office building. These are things that you would miss if you weren’t looking for them.”

There are many more interesting things to see on downtown buildings, including a boat, plane and train on the post office, and dogs on the building of the Springfield News-Sun, Rose said.

“We’ll also visit the 4-H (Club) Pocket Park. It’s an amazing little park that was designed by MSI in Columbus,” said Rose. “It has four 14-foot H’s, and trees. The kids really enjoy that space.”

Rose assures that this tour will keep kids’ attention. “One of the best educators in town is leading this tour, Rita Lane. She was the principal of Snowhill Elementary.”

Adult accompaniment and participation is required. Free tickets are available by phone or on the website. The Alliance will hold your tickets at the door.

The Springfield Preservation Alliance is an organization dedicated to recognize, preserve, and revitalize the architectural and cultural heritage of Springfield.
