Youngsters can enjoy an evening with Alice and her friends, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter during the Springfield Civic Theater’s production of Alice in Wonderland, Jr. this weekend.

Geared for elementary age children, the production features 60 local children between the ages of 6 and 17. Director Tonya Reynolds said that this version is a musical and follows the storyline of the animated movie.

It includes memorable tunes like “I’m Late,” “How Do You Do?” and “Shake Hands.”

“Disney’s Alice has been very popular as a movie,” said Reynolds. “Along those same lines, we have zany characters, magnificent costumes, and a bright, colorful set.”

Reynolds is pleased with the cast.

“They have been rehearsing since the end of August and have put in a lot of hard work,” she said, adding that only a few of the kids had theater experience. “I’m so impressed with them. Some had their lines memorized before we even did the blocking for the show. They put in time outside rehearsal to make this a great show.”

Three girls play Alice. Small Alice is Tessa Jenkins; medium Alice is Trinity Sherry; and tall Alice is Emma Alexander.

“They are all very good,” said Reynolds.

Guests can look forward to seeing all the well-known characters like the cat and the rabbit as well as the dodo bird, skunks and sea creatures.

“We have all kinds of creatures that come out of the forest,” said Reynolds. “We also have an evil Queen of Hearts and living playing cards.”

Natalie Sherry is in charge of costumes.

“She and her team have designed costumes with amazing detail and creativity. You can really see the time she’s put into the costumes. She wanted to be sure everyone in the cast felt special,” said Reynolds.

Reynolds says that the assistant director, Stephanie Jenkins, has been instrumental in getting the show ready by coordinating set design, programs and more.
